WHAT IS PIRELLI WC

The Pirelli World Challenge is a North American auto racing series that is managed by WC Vision and sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). The World Challenge series was born in 1990, and celebrated its 25th anniversary season in 2014.

The series consists of seven driver classifications and six classes of vehicles: Grand Touring (GT), GT Cup (new for 2015 - for Porsche 991 Cup cars), GTS, Touring Car (TC), "Touring Car B-spec" (TCB) since 2012, and "Touring Car A" (TCA), new in 2014. In 2014, a new GTA driver classification was established for professional drivers that do not make their living primarily from racing. The series typically races alongside the IndyCar Series on race event weekends.

In 1990, the series was officially named World Challenge and was restructured to adopt rules similar to the European Group A for homologated production cars. The higher-cost "sports" classes were dropped after 1996, leaving the class format as it would stand until 2010. Speed TV network began sponsoring the series in 1999.

In 2014, the Pirelli World Challenge established a GT-A classification similar to the FIA's bronze category. For 2015, the series will establish GT Cup, featuring Porsche 991 Cup Cars that will run as part of the overall GT Class races.

MULTI-CLASS

The IMSA TUDOR SportsCar Championship features two (2) styles of cars, Prototype and GT (Grand Touring). Each style of car has two (2) classes, Pro and Pro-Am, meaning there are four (4) classes of racing on track together, each with their own battle for the lead.

The Pro classes typically feature a professional driver line up while the Pro-Am classes pair a professional driver and amateur driver.

To help fans easily identify a class of car, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship implemented a new color system. A Pro class is designated by RED markings on the number panel, mirror, windscreen banner, rear wing end plate, class decal, and leader light.

A Pro-Am class is designated by BLUE markings on the number panel, mirror, windscreen banner, rear wing end plate, class decal, and leader light.

ENDURANCE

The Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup is a unique four-race competition encompassing the marquee endurance races on the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship schedule.  The winners in each of the four classes (Prototype, Prototype Challenge, GT Le Mans and GT Daytona) are awarded points at specific intervals for drivers, teams and manufacturers.

  • ROUND 2 - At the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida, points are awarded at four hours, eight hours and at the finish.

FAN EXPERIENCE

Sports fans can only dream of standing in the huddle at a professional football game or sitting in a Major League Baseball dugout.

Yet in sports car racing, the spectators become part of the action throughout an event weekend, right up until the green flag waves to start the competition at a typical IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship event.

The WeatherTech Championship provides a fan-friendly atmosphere where spectators enjoy unparalleled access to the cars, drivers and competitors throughout a typical race weekend in the open paddock area.

Fans have the opportunity to tour the paddock– where they can see crews prepare their cars for practice, qualifying and racing. They can take photographs and talk with participants throughout the race weekend.

All of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship drivers also participate in an organized autograph session at each event. They are happy to sign programs or a special memento from the weekend – although many of the teams will have souvenir postcards for the drivers to autograph.

Many of the venues hosting the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship also offer open seating. This allows fans to explore and experience the race from many different locations.
